Home Project: Design a set of licensed playing cards based upon a select number of gold medal winning Team Canada hockey jersey images.

The job included creating artwork for 52 cards, 2 Jokers, an information card and a retail box plus a 2-page promotional flyer. Six jerseys were chosen by the client and my existing airbrushed jersey artwork was composited into the digital layouts. Each of the card faces were problematic to design: Mirroring the jersey images to satisfy the requirement that the cards appear ‘upright’ when held would have seriously reduced their size and impact. The size limitations were further hindered on the Joker cards by the addition of bilingual text and historical Team logo graphics. My solution was a compromise involving the generation of a textured maple leaf on system to use as a vertically mirrored background. A circular composition of the 6 jerseys formed the basis for the card back design and the addition of the four suit patterns (hearts, clubs, diamonds & spades), to the perimeter of the image completes the front of the box.
